Nikon Vs Canon in a Changing DSLR Marketplace

Nikon is in a very competitive marketplace, so what other manufacturers do has a direct impact on Nikons product direction. Twenty years ago, Nikon owned the 35mm professional photography market, and then along came autofocus, followed by digital. Canon was traditionally the number 2 company. However with autofocus, Canon made inroads as both companies updated their product lines with new technology. Then came digital photography, Canon seized the opportunity, and by innovating and marketing more aggressively than Nikon, they seized the number one spot. They became the camera of choice for most pros by the early 21st century. Nikon responded hard in late 2007 by launching the D3 and D300 - anyone watching the Beijing Olympics will witness that about half the pros were shooting Nikon, the rest Canon. Four years earlier in Athens, Nikons were few and far between.

Now it's the second half of 2008, and Canon is firing shots back across Nikons bow.

The new Canon EOS 50D comes in a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the Nikon D300, yet beats the D300 in the megapixel race (15.1mp vs. 12.3mp) while claiming a higher maximum ISO (12,800 vs. 6,400). The D300 on paper appears to have better AF and faster frame rate, but someone new coming into the market will look long and hard at the cheaper, higher resolution, higher ISO Canon.

A couple of weeks later Canon fired another shot with the full frame EOS 5D Mark II. Again priced a few hundred dollars less than the Nikon it takes aim at - the D700. It boasts 21.1 mp vs. the Nikons 12.1 mp, while matching the max ISO of 25,600. Again, the D700 has a faster frame rate etc., but from a marketing perspective Canon now has a very strong platform to go after the serious amateur/prosumer, especially if they are not sports shooters.

However, it gets better. At the end of August Nikon announced the D90 - the first DSLR with video capture, sporting a full 720p. The ability to use SLR lenses for video and capture a very shallow depth of field is significant - it's not a feature for everyone, but for some this is huge, and could possible save them tens of thousands of dollars on video equipment. Less than 3 weeks later, Canon stole Nikons thunder again with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, sporting a full 1080p video capture mode in a prosumer camera (vs. the more entry level Nikon D90). Obviously Canon is serious about video too, and appears to have the superior system.

Then there is the 24.6 megapixel Sony that should start shipping in a few weeks time.

So far Nikon has been pushing back on the megapixel race, making noises about not wanting to slow down workflow, and higher megapixels not being needed. Higher megapixels also show up problems in lenses, cause diffraction issues and introduce a whole new set of problems. Very few people actually need more than 12 megapixels, however your average user or beginner does not know this. They are listening to the marketing people, and comparing bullet points on web sites between cameras to make their purchasing decisions. From a marketing perspective, Canon now has the upper hand in the serious amateur/semi-pro market. Nikon has to respond - either with a new set of products, or with an aggressive marketing campaign to educate consumers as to why megapixels don't matter. As has been proven time and again by numerous companies across multiple industries, launching new products to meet demand is virtually always cheaper and/or more profitable than trying to reeducate the consumer.

These are exciting times in the DSLR world; it took Canon a year to respond to the Nikon D300, and several months to respond to the Nikon D700. A response from Nikon will come, maybe not this year, but it has to come.

Traditional Scrapbooking with Kids

Scrapbooking isn’t just for adults. Kids love craft projects and scrapbooks can be a source of fun and memory keeping for your child. It’s a cure for boredom during the fall and winter when the weather isn’t always cooperating for outdoor play.

Making a scrapbook will allow your child to complete a project on his/her own and also gives a unique perspective about events and how your child remembers them. It is a great keepsake to cherish.

Some of the basic items you can use in a child’s scrapbook include crayons, stickers, safety scissors, fun paper, non-toxic glue sticks and fabric swatches. Create a box or basket of supplies for your child to use and have them set aside so that when they are in the creative mood they can continue to work on their own scrapbook.

Photos are the key ingredient to a great scrapbook. Have some additional copies made of photos you have developed from your 35mm camera or print out specific pictures that your child would like to use from your digital camera and photo printer. You could also start the project by giving your child their own disposable camera to take their own pictures and allow them the entire creative process to themselves. If your child is very young though they may want to take 24 pictures of the same flower in the front yard so have a limit to picture taking of 2-3 photos of one object so they will have some variety to work with.

After you have the pictures developed, you can give your child copies of the pictures he or she chooses to use for their special pages. Save all tickets, brochures and receipts from special days at the fair or amusement park so that they can add that memorabilia to their layouts. You can save these items in a shoebox and have them ready for your child to use when they want to work on their scrapbook.

Have your child start by laying out the page and gluing on special items such as that postcard from your last vacation trip or ticket from the amusement rides on the pier at the beach. They can then color or use markers to enhance the pages. If they are old enough to write about their special memories, encourage them to write about some of their favorite parts of their trip or the people they were with. Kids can come up with some pretty humorous anecdotes and you will want to preserve their thoughts for them if they are unable to write them down. You can make a list by having them answer some simple questions such as: Where did you go on vacation? Who did you play with while you were at the beach? What was your favorite part of the trip? Did you discover or learn anything new? What foods or drinks did you have? Did you buy any special souvenirs? Then you can take those answers and write them on paper for your child. This makes a great page to add to your layouts, that you can create for them and have them glue together.

Make sure you allow them to create and layout the pages as they see fit and not perfectly as adults would do. Remember it is their own creation and they will take pride in the fact that they made their own project. You will gain insight on how your child views and values memories they have made. It is a great way to bond with your child and preserve memories while having fun together.

If you are not using a traditional scrapbook album for each page, you can make your own scrapbook by punching holes down the sides of each page and then threading them together. You could also punch three holes and put the pages in a binder so they can add more each time they create a new layout or have a new occasion to commemorate.

Empower kids to create and you will open a new avenue of learning for them!

The Nikon D3000 DSLR Digital SLR Camera - The Future Has Arrived

We are truly living in the future. We may not have flying cars but we do have a smart camera that teaches its users photography. This smart camera can ask you what kind of photo you want and then adjust its settings to capture it. So users don't need to know much about photography to get really professional looking photos. And for users who want to learn about photography, this futuristic camera's Guide Mode will show you how to set up these kinds of shots yourself.

This "smart camera" is the Nikon D3000 DSLR Digital SLR Camera and is Nikon's newest entry level camera for people wanting to upgrade from their point and shoot cameras. It is also for those wanting to learn more about photography. With its in-camera Guide Mode it actually teaches users about aperture, shutter speed, infinity and all that other technical stuff that allows the professionals to get those amazing shots.

The Nikon D3000 DSLR Digital SLR Camera not only teaches photography, it also lets users edit photos right inside the camera. And it comes with some really awesome editing abilities. One that I find really fun in the "Miniature effect" feature under the Retouch Menu. This lets you make any photo look like a miniature model. How fun is that! Turn your house into a miniature, your backyard, your cat, etc. etc. Think of all the fun photographs you can create with this little effect.

Another fun feature of the Nikon D3000 is the Stop Motion capability. Say you're taking photos of your dog jumping up to catch a freesbie and you've captured him in sequence shots. The camera will let you paste those images together to create a stop motion video segment. And all of this is done inside the camera. You don't even need to go near a computer. And all of the editing functions are applied to a copy of the image, leaving your original image unaltered. Edit all you want and still have the original.

But don't think that because this is a starter camera that it is cheaply made or disposable like so many point and shoot cameras. This camera is a professional camera. It uses interchangeable lenses, and has a hot shoe for a detachable flash (but still come with a pop-up flash). Once you've outgrown the Nikon D3000 DSLR Digital SLR Camera, all of your lenses and accessories can be used on an upgraded, more high-end camera body.

Here are some of the setting modes worth mentioning:

Programmed Auto Mode: this mode chooses the best settings in aperture and shutter speed when you're just starting out so you don't have to mess with it.

The Shutter-Priority Auto Mode: you get to choose what shutter speed you want and the camera sets the aperture automatically.

The Aperture-Priority Auto Mode: you pick the aperture setting you want and the camera selects the shutter speed.

(If the above 3 modes seem redundant or like overkill, they're not. It is all part of letting you be really creative in exactly what effects you want to capture. You'll understand after you've used the Guide Mode for awhile.)

Manual Mode: this mode give you complete control over aperture and shutter speed once you have learned what those are and how to use them to create great photos.

The Portrait Mode and Child Mode: these modes are similar in that they both soften skin tones. And the Portraiture mode blurs the background while the Child Mode makes the background more vivid.

The Close Up mode: this is a really fun mode that lets you take close-up shots of tiny things, like flowers and insects.

There are other modes as well including a night mode, sports mode and landscape mode which are all self explanatory.

In creating the Nikon D3000 DSLR Digital SLR Camera, Nikon has come up with a really unique way to help regular people become better photographers. And therefore, have better, higher quality family photographs on their walls and in their photo albums.

If you are looking for a camera that is a step above the point and shoot cameras, the Nikon D3000 DSLR Digital SLR Camera is the one to choose. It is smart enough to help you get professional looking photos and teach you how to become a better photographer. The special effects like Miniature mode add a highly creative twist to the traditional SLR cameras, and it's made by one of the most trusted companies in the world.

Or maybe you're looking for a camera for your son, daughter, or sibling. They will be thrilled to get this camera as a gift and it will repay you for many years to come with gorgeous professional quality photos of your family and friends. Truly the best starter camera on the market today. To get more information on the Nikon D3000 DSLR Digital SLRCamera click here now.

Understanding Film Types and ISO Ratings - Beginning Photography Basics

Beginning photographers are usually so wrapped up in learning about exposure, depth of field, and creative composition - they tend to overlook the importance of what they are recording the image onto. Whether it be film or a digital sensor - what takes place when the image hits it has a huge determining factor of what it will look like, and most especially will determine how much work you have to do in the darkroom or on the PC.

It should be noted that while I will be mentioning popular film brands, I am not promoting them. I'm not sponsored, nor am I a film sales affiliate. These are the brands I am accustomed to working with. You will need to decide for yourself and hopefully these guidelines will help you.

In my beginning years as a film photographer if you were to dig through my backpack you would find a dozen different film types and way too many rolls per type. "Afterall," I would mutter under the extra weight, "never know what I will encounter!" To a certain extent that is true, but having 10 rolls of 100 ISO color print film of varying brands is a bit extreme!

A simple guideline to follow that you can test for yourself starts with choosing the right ISO rating for the film you work with. As a matter of fact, these ISO principals are the same for digital cameras as well!

Quite simply, the ISO rating is that number on the film box. If you purchased it at the local grocery store it's usually a 200, 400, or 800. That number is the film's rating of how sensitive it is to light. The higher the number the more sensitive - the lower, the less. The mistake many beginning photographers make is the assumption that the higher the number the better because they can shoot in lower light and not use flash, and still use faster shutter speeds. This is fine if you are CSI photographer at a crime scene at night...not so fine if you are shooting a gorgeous landscape with the last of the day's light on the horizon.

Basically - the higher the ISO number the worse the quality of the image - especially if you will enlarge prints. The lower the ISO (particularly where landscapes and nature are concerned) the better the image quality. With print film - color or black & white, when you get up into the 800 and higher range you will see an increase of grain in the printed image. This becomes even more visible as you enlarge the photo. While some artsy photos are quite appealing with this grain, it is extremely unappealing in fine art landscapes or nature. Of course the higher ISO rated films have their place in photography: sports and, well, CSI night photography!

In the 125 ISO or lower range these films are extremely fine grain and generally reproduce fantastic colors! They are excellent for enlargements. Black and white film in this ISO range will have superb contrast and an incredibly smooth tonal range (the transition from white to black).

As a starting point I recommend the following ISO ratings:

50 - 125: Landscapes and scenics

125 - 160: Portraits, people photography where flattering skin reproduction is important

200 or higher: Sports

In case you are wondering, you will not find these high quality films at your local convenience store! You will need to find a camera shop or buy from a professional supplier.

Now, with a general understanding of ISO, this leads to the next part: which film types? For the sake of simplifying education I am focusing on Daylight film, which is usually what you are handed over the counter. But should you shoot with print film or slide film? (also referred to as transparency or chrome film) This will depend on what you are shooting and what will be the end result.

Color Landscapes

Most serious film photographers will agree that slide film in the 100 ISO or lower range is what they work with exclusively. Along with many other photographers, if I am working in color film for landscapes you will only find Fuji Velvia (50 ISO) or Fuji Provia (100 ISO) slide film in my bag. They enlarge prints extremely well, have unsurpassed sharp resolution, and reproduce fantastic shadows and realistic colors. If you have any aspirations of submitting your work to publishers, you will need to learn to work with slide film. Most only accept transparencies or digital files.

The disadvantages with these slide films is they are just that - transparencies. You will have to spend a few more bucks to have prints made from them, and unless you are working with a highly skilled printer the results can be sometimes be disappointing compared to the original transparency. If you want to make a digital file out of it you will need to buy a high end film and transparency scanner. Slide film is also very easy to over expose during the shoot. So until you are accomplished at right-on exposures, you may think I'm an idiot recommending these slide films.

If you are a serious landscape photographer my personal recommendation is to avoid color print films. I switched to the high-end slide films because I never found a color print film that satisfied me. However, I have no doubt there are photographers who have something to say about that.

Black and white landscapes are entirely different. There are many excellent black and white print films available, but after much testing you will only find Ilford PanF (50 ISO) and FP4 (125 ISO) in my film bag. In my bold opinion - black and white print film for landscapes and scenics does not get any better than these.

Portrait and People Photography

Until you become highly skilled with exposure, and you are working with models that have flawless skin - stick to print films. The most important factor with color portrait photography is skin tones. Using films with ISO ratings lower than 160 will bring out the red pigments in a person's skin more than if you stick to the 160 range. Go below 100 and your model will look like they have a nasty rash! I speak from experience.

Kodak makes a wonderful color portrait film called Portra 160. In my opinion it reproduces the most pleasant skin tones and the contrast is perfect. Just as important, it enlarges very well. If you want to try black and white portraits I also recommend giving Ilford FP4 a try. You will see some of the smoothest facial tones imaginable with this film!

One of the advantages with color and black & white print film is the exposure tolerance (or film lattitude) is excellent. This means that if your exposure is just slightly off, the image will still most likely come out looking very nice.

I recommend these as starting points to find what works best for your photography. It is important for you to learn for yourself what works well, and what does not. However, applying these principals will give you a significant step up towards perfecting your photographic work.

Discover the superb response of up to 7 fps of continuous shooting. This camera's 14.2 megapixel resolution makes for incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements. The all-new Sony Exmor CMOS image sensor ensures state-of-the-art response. The large, APS-C format means high sensitivity, powerful depth-of-focus control. Unlike competing cameras, the DSLR-A550 is just as responsive in Quick Auto Focus Live View mode as in optical viewfinder mode. That's because, unlike the others, the a550 uses the same "phase detection" auto focus for Live View as for the optical viewfinder. While other Live View systems are severely restricted, Sony's performs superbly any time--even if you're shooting handheld or chasing after moving subjects like kids or pets. All DSLR Live View systems enable you to compose shots in the LCD monitor, just as you would with a point-and-shoot camera. But not all Live View systems are created equal. Some take a painfully long time to focus. Some even black out the LCD before focus. Either can cause you to miss shots. Sony's Quick Auto Focus Live View solves these problems, making it easier to get the best shot.

The difference between film and digital photography

There are many differences between film and digital photography. To most amateur photographers they do not matter much. They prefer the convenience, ease of use and lower cost of digital cameras and are not going to revert to the film age. However understanding the differences can help taking even better photos and can also help when debating with friends about the future of film.

Following is a list of differences that are important to understand. The differences are listed in no particular order.

The sensor: The most obvious difference between film and digital is the sensor used to take the photo. With film cameras a film sensitive to light is placed behind the lens. When a photo is taken the shutter opens for a predetermined period of time and light hits the film. The result is a photo “printed” on the film. To take a new photo the film has to be rolled and a fresh “clean” film is place behind the lens. With digital cameras a fixed electronic sensor (sometimes known as CCD) is situated behind the lens. The sensor is built from tiny light sensitive sensors each representing a pixel. When the shutter opens light hits the sensor and each pixel gets its “value”. Put together all the pixels comprise one photo. To take a new photo the photo is saved on a digital media and the CCD is electronically emptied.

What does a different sensor mean? The main difference is in the Depth of Field. Since digital sensors are smaller in size than a 35mm film the depth of field will be much higher and in fact in most compact digital cameras almost infinite. The result is that blur backgrounds can not be created.

The cost of a photo: Photos taken with a digital camera literally cost nothing. The photos are kept in erasable memory and thus can always be discarded at no cost. Also the photos you would like to keep can be copied to digital media such as a computer’s hard disk. With storage prices going down the cost of saving a photo on disk is practically zero. Film does cost money. With a film camera you have to pay for the roll of film, for developing the negative and for printing the photo. Every time you press the shutter button you spend money.

The capacity: With ever growing storage capacities digital cameras today can hold hundreds and sometimes thousands of photos on a single media. You can always have a few more in your pocket and changing is very fast. The result is that a digital camera has practically infinite capacity. You can shoot as many photos as you want and at the end of the day just dump them on your computer’s disk. Film cameras’ capacity is very limited. A roll of 36 photos can only hold 36 photos. After a roll is used changing to a new roll can take time and is not easy to do in scenarios such as darkness or a harsh environment. For that reason many professional journalists carry a few cameras on them and instead of changing rolls they turn and use another camera just so that they do not miss a shooting opportunity.

The feedback: One of the most important features of the digital camera is instant feedback. Almost all digital cameras include a small LCD screen. Once a photo is shot you can go back and watch it on that screen. The ability to see how the photo looks like results in better photos. If the photo is not good you can take another one. Being able to see the photos on the spot results in an educated decision how to fix a photo or how to better compose it. It takes a lot of the guessing away from photography. With film cameras there is no way to know how the photo on the film will look like when printed.

New shooting angles: Just a few days ago I took a great photo with my digital camera that I would have never taken with my film one. I shot a cat that was resting on little rock. I held the camera in my hand and positioned it down where it almost touched the ground and I started shooting. I probably took 50 or more photos. I immediately looked at the camera’s LCD to review my photos and make sure they were focused and had the cat in them. The result was one great photo looking at the cat from the ground. I can not imagine myself just lying down on the dirty ground with a film camera looking through the viewfinder and perfecting that one shot.

With digital cameras you can actually take photos without having your eye glued to the viewfinder. Overhead shots where you raise the camera over your head are much easier to do since you can still see what the camera is shooting by just looking up at its LCD screen.

Correcting photos: With digital cameras photos can be corrected using photo editing software. Some correction abilities are built-in to the cameras but many more are available as software packages for your PC. With film cameras what you get is what you get. After the film is developed it is very hard to make any corrections. Usually if corrections are absolutely needed the negative or the printed photo will be scanned (i.e. converted to digital) corrected and then printed again (in a long and costly process).

Changing conditions: Every roll of film is designed for best results in a specific environment. For example there are indoor and outdoor films or films with different light sensitivity. If conditions change rapidly a film camera user will have to either shoot with the wrong film, change the roll (and usually lose photos that were not used in the current roll) or use another camera with a different film in it. The results of shooting with the wrong film can be distorted colors (reddish photos for example), a grainy photo and more.

With digital cameras the characteristics of the sensor can be changed instantly for each photo taken. With a click of a button the camera can be put in an indoor or outdoor mode, low light, night photography etc. Some cameras will automatically sense the scenario and set the sensor mode accordingly.

The myth of quality: While it is true that film photography has its advantages the claim for superior quality is no longer true. As digital camera evolved the quality of high end digital SLR cameras is superb and in many ways even better than film. When considering quality you should also consider the quality in terms of composition and the scenario caught in the photo. With digital cameras’ high capacity, zero photo cost and instant adaptability to changing conditions photographers can produce better compositions and experiment more to get the best photo possible.

Longevity: We have also paged through old photo albums of our grandparents. The photo looked a a bit yellow, scratched and just plain “old”. Storage of printed film photos or even negatives results in quality deterioration. Digital photos on the other hand never lose their quality. A digital photo will be identical today and 500 years from now. As long as we remember to refresh the digital media every now and then and to back it up our photos can literally list forever and not lose their quality.

The Rule of Thirds - Raising the Bar of Excellence

The three greatest photo tips of all time as far as photography is concerned include: leading lines, the rule of thirds, and framing. This article will only address one of these, but once you master all three of these, your photography will look better than 90% of all photos out there. Don't believe me? I once did a project where I looked through 200,000 professional stock photos and was only able to find 50 that had mastered all three of these elements.

Centuries ago, Greek artists discovered that the eye tends to focus on certain points in any given image. If you divide your picture into thirds both horizontally and vertically, the points at which those lines intersect are the points where most people focus comfortably. You don't have to draw an arrow, in most cases this is where they will look without any coaching from you or anyone else. This is commonly referred to as the "Rule of Thirds".

By placing your subject (or point of interest) at one of these natural focus points, you have greatly increased the odds that the viewer will indeed be captivated by your work. As you do this more and more; people will notice that for some reason your work seems more interesting than their "Bull's-eye" type snap shot. They won't understand it, but they will be drawn to your work just like a magnet.

The Greeks and Egyptians were great mathematicians. I on the other hand; am not great at math, but I do understand the concept of 1/3rd in from the left or right and 1/3rd up or down. Those who know the formula will argue that it's not exactly 1/3rd, but that's OK. One of the things the rule of thirds does for your image is to give it movement. But wait a minute; you're asking what if my subject isn't moving? That's fine, but it gives your mind somewhere to go with the image. When your subject is dead center, your mind takes one glance and says, "Ok, next." Remember: "It's kind of hard to experience a photograph, if there's nothing left to the imagination."

Even when doing extreme close-ups it is possible to use the rule of thirds. Think of a beautiful models face, what's the first thing you look at? Do you immediately look at the nose? No, I doubt that very much. Usually you either look at the eyes or the lips. Both of these happen to be located where? Both of these heart stopping subjects are located 1/3rd up or 1/3rd down from dead center. Since the nose is usually located dead center; that's why I tend to doubt that it was the first thing that would catch your attention. I'm not saying a person can't have a cute nose, but where it's placed in the picture will determine just how much attention it will get.

Most girls are self conscious about their looks, that's why they tell you to back up. But in reality, that's exactly why you should NOT back up, in fact, you should probably get closer. If you shoot full body on a regular basis, what is usually at 1/3 from the bottom? If a girl is thinking she's fat, you don't want people staring at her waist. Force the viewer to look at her strength's. Draw his attention to her dreamy eyes; or her wonderful smile, not a few extra pounds at her waist.

This same concept works for other subjects besides people. Let's say you have a beautiful stream coming down a mountain side. If you shoot horizontally with the stream dead center, you cut the photo in half. Now in this example, we also have to consider leading lines. If you shoot the stream diagonally and it ends somewhere in the lower left third of the picture, you have still taken advantage of the rule of thirds. This is one of those "professional photo tips" that allows your viewer to experience your photo and not just glance at it.

When you can guide someone into an image and allow them to have an emotional response, your work is much more likely to be remembered. When you use the rule of thirds on a regular basis, you have raised the bar of excellence in such a way that people can not help but to be refreshed and invigorated by your work. If they feel that good just by experiencing your photo once, think how much better they will feel when they start buying your work and enjoying it everyday.

Rule of Thirds - Think Again

If you search Google for "rule of thirds," you will get more than 3 million returns. Clearly it is a popular rule and deserves to be looked at closely. I examined about 50 of these websites and found them all to accept the premise that using the rule of thirds is a key to producing good photographs, although a few suggested that the rule should be viewed more as a guide.
The following comments were typical:

"A handy rule to follow that will help you to compose a quality photo every time is the rule of thirds."

"Everything you see in a frame needs to be composed along the lines of the rule of thirds."

"Using the Rule of Thirds helps produce nicely balanced easy on the eye pictures."

This advice is usually followed by a diagram showing how the rule of thirds is calculated. A small number of the sites go on to say that the rule of thirds was derived from the Golden Mean. Some even give a brief history of the Golden Mean. At least one writer justifies the use of the rule of thirds based on eye-scan studies.

What is the rule of thirds? It is a guide for positioning the center of interest in a photograph. According to this rule, there are four preferred points to place a center of interest. To find these points, draw imaginary parallel lines across your camera's viewfinder at the one-third and two-thirds positions. Do this in both the horizontal and vertical directions. These four lines will meet at four points. The points mark where the center of interest should be placed.

As I said, many sites make the claim that the rule of thirds is derived from the Golden Mean. And what is the Golden Mean (see also: Golden Cup, Golden Triangle, Golden Rectangle, Golden Ratio, Golden Spiral, all based on approximately the same idea). The Golden Mean is a ratio of two numbers (approximately 1:.62). It can be represented by a line that is divided so that the shorter segment is about .38 and the longer about .62 of the length. A golden rectangle is a rectangle whose sides have the ratio of 1:.62. In Diagram 2 the entire figure is a Golden Rectangle. By dividing the large rectangle at the .618 position, we get a square and another Golden rectangle.

As there are many mathematic sites that give the history and the derivation of the Golden Mean, there is no reason to repeat that information here. I haven't found any sites that give the history of the rule of thirds. It is always referred to as a simplification of the Golden Mean or Golden Rectangle.
But is it? Not exactly. First, the rule of thirds uses lines placed at the 33% and 67% positions, whereas the Golden Mean places its line at 62%. So already we're 5% off. That's not too bad. But there is another problem. The rule of thirds is about points, the four points where the parallel lines meet. The Golden Mean is about a line. Points and lines are not the same thing.
There is another problem. The ratio of the sides of the Golden Rectangle is approximately 3:2, or about the same as the sides of a 35mm negative. But the ratio of the sides of most consumer digital cameras is 4:3. Not only that, but prints often have a different height-to-width ratio (aspect) so your perfectly composed photograph is cropped when it is printed.

But if it works, forget all about these arguments. The most important thing is to get superior photographs. So the next question is, "Does it work?"

Eye-tracking studies. There have been a number of scientific studies, many ongoing, to determine how a viewer's eyes move when he looks at a piece of art. The early results show that there is no universal eye-scan pattern. It depends, in part, on what the viewer is looking for and his level of expertise.

Do viewers really prefer paintings and photographs that use the rule of thirds? I am not aware of any studies done on the rule of thirds, but there have been quite a few on the Golden Rectangle.

The first of many objectives studies was done in the 1870s by the German psychologist G. T. Fechner. He presented his subjects with a set of ten rectangles of varied proportions and asked them to choose the one they found most pleasing. Although the Golden Rectangle was the favorite, it was chosen by only 35% of the subjects. The second favorite, a rectangle with a 1:1.5 ratio, was picked by 21% of the subjects.

Studies on rectangular preference have continued to the present with mixed results. Some researchers have found a preference for the Golden Mean while others have not. However, in those studies where a preference was found, it was never higher than 35%.

In 1894 the American psychologist Edgar Pierce did another interesting experiment. He asked people to place a line in a frame in the position they found most pleasing. The Golden Ratio was the most popular position. However, when Pierce placed additional lines on both sides of the moveable line, the subjects tended to move their line from the Golden Mean position to a position about half-way between the closest fixed lines.

Conclusion. First of all, for reasons pointed out above, the rule of thirds and the Golden Rectangle are not the same thing. One deals with points and the other deals with lines. Second, objective studies show that although there probably is a preference for art based on Golden Rectangle proportions, at best it is only preferred by 35% of viewers. Finally, the studies done by Pierce showed that subjects initially showed a preference for a line placed at about the 60% position in the frame. However, they changed their preference when additional lines were put into the frame. Since the rule of thirds doesn't take into consideration anything but placement of the center of interest, perhaps it's too simple a concept to be used in composing complex photographs.
