How to Learn About Photography
First, decide what kind of photography you are interested in. Are you looking to take pictures of people, places or things? Something you should know is this--that you do not have to run out and buy the most expensive camera that you can find. If you are a beginner, start with a point and shoot camera, and gradually build up to a better camera.
Do you want to take photos individually or at crowded events or even at parties, or Marathons or Inaugurations? These are questions that you need to ask yourself; what is your purpose in photography. Decide whether you want official education or if you want to learn on the job or just out in life.
You can choose both, of course.
Here are some ways that you can learn how to take wonderful pictures:
Ask for the free brochure from some of the correspondence schools in your city or in other cities. Believe it or not, you can actually learn some photo hints from just reading their brochures. And then if you want to go on to more education, you are free to do that. Get on the mailing list of those correspondence schools and do not enroll quickly. What I have learned is that the longer you are on someone's mailing lists, the better the offers are that they send to you. If you stay on long enough, they usually send you coupons for discounts from their schools.
Check out your local colleges and check out the art and photography courses that they offer for matriculating students and for continuing education students.
Learn in real life. Go to many photo exhibits. At these exhibits, you can observe the photographs and learn how to pose people for group photos. You can learn lighting and more if you are observant enough. Ask yourself --for each photo, "Where is the light coming from; what is the effect"?
These are ways to learn.
You can also join photo clubs. Ask at the college if they have a photo club.

So far, I'm very excited to have my Nikon D90. It is my first DSLR camera, and I never owned a SLR, but it is everything I've been looking for in a camera. The 18-105mm lens is wonderful! I have barely had time to use the other lens so far. The bag that the camera came with, in my opinion is to cramped for the camera. I guess I say this, because I plan on buying a macro lens, and will need to find a bigger bag. I think the bag is very cumbersome, and will be looking into a back pack camera bag since I am a photographer that likes to travel around and take photos.
The battery life on this camera is AMAZING. I am very pleased to have taken over 2000 photos and have only charged my battery 1 or 2 times max.
I'm very pleased with my purchase!

Don't Ever Buy A Canon PowerShot SX100IS Digital Camera
How long will camera manufactures continue to keep cranking out cameras with the same flaws over and over again? Apparently, just a little bit longer. It's like Canon and others are asleep at the wheel. Buying a Canon PowerShot SX100IS Digital could be a disappointing proposition for many, unless they're informed of what the camera can and can't do. So, in the spirit of spreading the word, let's take a better second look at the SX100IS, and see what's in store for the perspective purchaser.
The flash is setup a little different. To some this will be a bonus, but to others nothing but a pain. In most point and shoots, the flash is always live and is automatically used for most indoor pictures. For the SX100IS however, you have to manually pop up the flash before taking a picture. Canon is assuming that the user can decide if the flash is needed, as opposed to letting the camera decide. It's a mistake in my mind. Most people buying point and shoots like this Canon Powershot camera, don't want to have to think before each picture about lighting conditions. They just want the picture. Most of the time, people are most going to forget to pop the flash up, and end up missing some great pictures.
And here's another surprise. Expect a four or five second delay between taking pictures while the SX100IS flash recharges. Just like every other point and shoot out there. I know this doesn't happen in the SLR camera category, but I also don't believe I should have to spend $600 plus to get that feature. With the amount of money consumers have spent on digital cameras, the industry really needs to focus their R&D on this problem. Expecting point and shoot camera users to get the perfect picture the first time is unreasonable. Even the pros aren't that good.
For some artificial reason, Canon has decided to prevent zooming during video recording with the SX100IS digital camera. There's really no good technical reason for doing this. It works fine on some of their more expensive cameras. It almost smells of deliberately crippling this PowerShot SX100IS for marketing reasons in an attempt to make the more expensive cameras enticing.
Every once in a while, you find a camera that seems to be the one for you. In the case of the SX100IS, I found myself somewhat wanting more. Unfortunately, I still have a few more gripes:
- image quality, suffers in lighter environments
- no viewfinder, which limits users options
- LCD screen has no protection, and susceptible to scratching
- scroll wheel is too responsive, and prone to selecting wrong setting

Great camera I've been shooting for 8 years and this is my first DSLR. It's superior to any of the compacts I've owned recently. I bought a 28mm-100mm sigma lens and it's crystal clear pics are fantastic. It's very fast I can snap 5 pictures in the time my old camera processed one.
It's easy enough my wife can use it with no problems. The features are great too you can change the photo into B & W, Sepia, watercolor, pastel, high contrast, soft focus and save the results on the camera. I would recommend to any photographer looking for a first DSLR. I only wish the body was not plastic and was weather proofed.

The A700 is Sony's declaration that they can play in the big leagues (as they showed us with the A900).
Even though it may be a year and a few months old, this camera enjoys the benefits of the recent launch of firmware version 4 which enhances the noise reduction in both JPEG and RAW among other things. It practically reinvogorated this camera.
It's 12.24 megapixels will work well for large prints (although if you're gonna print wall size, you're better off with the A900).
This camera is fast, responsive, easy to use and highly customizable. You can chose from a variety of options to make your photography faster and more enjoyable with this camera.
It may be heavy for some people, but thats due to the magnesium casing which protects the inside. This camera is meant for hard work and serious business.
For those people who used Minolta SLRs and still keep their lenses, they can use them on this camera, since the Alpha DSLR line benefits of the A-mount that Minolta and KonicaMinolta cameras used.
It doesnt have live view, if you need it, you should get the A300/350.
This camera however, shares one feature along with its A100/900 sisters, the Depth Of Field button, which in few words, closes down the lens to the selected aperture so you can see how sharp the image will be. This is a VERY important tool to have if you care about composition and want absolute control of how your pictures will come out.
Don't be thrown off by the fact this is the oldest camera in the range right now, if you really want and need all the features this camera has to offer, get it, the replacement model for this camera wont be arriving before Fall 2009, thats a lot of time to wait and you will miss a lot of shots during that time. At the prices this camera has right now, its a great deal. You wont regret getting this camera.
The great advantage of this kit is that it comes with a 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens. You will read a lot of negative reviews about this lens, about how unsharp it is, how this, how that. Dont pay attention to it. If you're on a budget and you need this camera and a decent lens to start with, get it. The unsharpness issues you can correct by setting the camera's sharpness levels. Besides, its the photographer that makes the picture, not the lens. Having an expensive lens wont make you take better pictures.
Ive shot a lot of photos with this camera and lens and Im extremely happy so far. This lens may not be exactly a fast lens, but its a great lens to begin using a DSLR.
The A700 gives you a great value for your money, lots of options and excellent results at an affordable price.
Don't hesitate, if you want/need this camera, get it. You wont be disappointed.

Sony Alpha DSLRA500 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only) Customer Review
I'm going to contain my enthusiasm for long enough to get some details down about what I love about the A500. This is one GREAT camera body and I am having a ball using it.
I previously used both a Minolta 9xi (their top of the line 35mm film camera) as well as Mamiya medium format gear which I still use for weddings and portraits. With the advent of good digital cameras and especially digital darkroom (AKA Photoshop) I had become increasingly frustrated dealing with film but had not found a digital SLR that performed well enough for my relatively limited amateur budget so made do with a nice pocket-sized digital Nikon zoom which takes great pictures but is slow slow slow compared to what I was used to. Since I had an investment in Minolta lenses I was inclined toward the Sony line (which takes the Maxxum lenses) but earlier models seemed like too much of a compromise for the $$$. Enter the A500!
Things I love about it:
- 12.3 megapixels
- really easy and intuitive controls, which in a lot of ways are similar to the 9xi so especially easy for me
- fast initial and shot-to-shot speed - I use the 5fps continuous mode for sports all the time
- fabulous low-light performance
- in-body (vs in-lens) antishake - still have not resorted to a tripod!
- very high maximum ISO
- excellent battery performance (covered two school basketball games using Live View with juice to spare)
- high memory capacity - I think I have 8Gb in it, and shooting in "fine" resolution I get about 1450 images and about 500 in "raw" mode. I LOVE LOVE LOVE never having to stop to change film cartridges and never worrying about running out! If the subject matter and final use allowed fewer megapixels or smaller image size I could get 5000+ images on this thing. Woo hoo! Talk about built for news or sporting events!
One nice surprise was how fast I can download the images from the camera - previously downloading images from my 5mp Nikon Coolpix I was prepared to wait a long time to download the larger files from the A500. Much to my surprise it was perhaps even a bit faster. Same computer, same USB port. Nice!
All this for a very reasonable price (and I caught it on a day where the price was 0 off Amazon's usual price - what a deal!). I've still not explored all this baby can do, and look forward to getting to know it better. So far most of what I have been shooting has been sports but next up are some portraits and out to do some landscape/nature stuff. I'm eager to see how my 100-300mm lens does on the A500 with wildlife under the forest canopy, and tripod work to maximize image quality of scenic and nature shots.
Most of the time I use it with the Sony 18-105mm lens, pretty decent but I have not put it through its paces fully. My father-in-law has the equivalent Zeiss and I'm definitely going to borrow it for comparisons. I wish it were faster in the longer focal lengths. Also, I wish there was a prime lens closer to the 35mm equivalent of 90-100mm, my favorite portrait length. For now I'm making do with a Minolta 50mm f1.7 prime, which is equivalent to 75mm on the 9xi - an excellent lens and between f1.7, high ISO values, and the Sony's anti-vibe and low light performance I practically never have to take subject motion or available light into consideration - which means the subject doesn't have to think about the camera and I can focus on letting them do what they do while I capture it. This is just...unleashed!

How Do I Know Which Digital Camera to Buy?
This is a major question that many photographers may ask. The decision however is based on how much time you are willing to put into reviewing the cameras and what they offer, what you intend to do with the camera, and considering the options as they come your way.
Questions to Consider:
What are my intentions?
Am I creating Web Pages?
Am I ultimately attempting to go pro?
What type of camera would suit me best?
Do I need high-resolution or low-resolution?
What do the pixels matter?
Do I want film or digital?
What are you intentions? If you merely want a camera to perform a few tasks here and there, such as taking your own family photos, you might try out the line of SLR low-end models or else the standard compacts.
If you are off to the journey of pro photography, you will need an interchangeable camera, to produce the types of pictures desired, especially if you are going for sport photography. If you are venturing to snap wildlife shots, or create, documentary pictures then you will need to consider the rangefinders or the wide-angled cameras. As for documentaries, you may want to toss in a high-quality camcorder, since you could possibly go on air with your doc. Hey, a moment of wishful thinking, but it could happen. One thing you want to keep in mind is that at what time you consider a camera for high-quality pictures, you want to stay in the range of medium formatting cameras since many will deliver quality. You will need a large frame camera if you are considering films, yet other cameras have proven to work wonders.
If you are creating web pages, a low-resolution camera will do just fine. The resolution for web page images should remain at 72dpi (dots per inch). If you use a higher resolution it will only slow the process of page downloads.
Now is the question, are you going pro or are you flying so low? If you are going pro, you may want to research the line of AF SLR cameras in 35mm logic. On the other hand, if you are thinking so low, you can view the Direct Vision lines, Digital and Film Compact, and the likes.
What type of camera would suit you best depends on you. You will need to consider your budget, compatibilities of your systems, film, or digital, and the like.
Do you need high or low resolution depends on you again. At least to a degree, the decision is yours. If you are creating web pages then a standard camera with low-resolution is your best bet. Most times, you can find cheaper cameras for website creation.
The pixels do matter. Since if you are going to work as pro off the web then you will need the highest pixel camera to achieve high quality photos. On the other hand, if you are designing web pages you will need the lowest pixels, say at around 72dpi for the best results.
Well do you want film or digital? Digital works off a scanner, printer, and computer, or even from a card or camera. While some of the film, cameras require that you purchase a roll of film to snap shots. If you want to keep investing in film that may be outdated someday as digital takes over, then go for the film. On the other hand, go digital and produce your own photos on a software program and computer. The pictures may come out more to your likings.

This is by far the best DSLR I got.
I get the best pic quality and loads of them out of it.
I do not like the fact that it is heavy which makes me wana leave it back some times but the picture quality makes it so worth it.
I only with they had PentaPrisms ...and also if it could still be lighter in weight.
Considering the number of features packed into it i know it ought to be atleast this heavy ..but it would be nice if sony could work a way to make it as useful yet light.
