First, decide what kind of photography you are interested in. Are you looking to take pictures of people, places or things? Something you should know is this--that you do not have to run out and buy the most expensive camera that you can find. If you are a beginner, start with a point and shoot camera, and gradually build up to a better camera.
Do you want to take photos individually or at crowded events or even at parties, or Marathons or Inaugurations? These are questions that you need to ask yourself; what is your purpose in photography. Decide whether you want official education or if you want to learn on the job or just out in life.
You can choose both, of course.
Here are some ways that you can learn how to take wonderful pictures:
Ask for the free brochure from some of the correspondence schools in your city or in other cities. Believe it or not, you can actually learn some photo hints from just reading their brochures. And then if you want to go on to more education, you are free to do that. Get on the mailing list of those correspondence schools and do not enroll quickly. What I have learned is that the longer you are on someone's mailing lists, the better the offers are that they send to you. If you stay on long enough, they usually send you coupons for discounts from their schools.
Check out your local colleges and check out the art and photography courses that they offer for matriculating students and for continuing education students.
Learn in real life. Go to many photo exhibits. At these exhibits, you can observe the photographs and learn how to pose people for group photos. You can learn lighting and more if you are observant enough. Ask yourself --for each photo, "Where is the light coming from; what is the effect"?
These are ways to learn.
You can also join photo clubs. Ask at the college if they have a photo club.
